According to a study done by the Medical College of Wisconsin and the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, a 60 minute workout on various pieces of equipment will burn the following average number of calories:

treadmill: 705 – 865 calories
Stair machine: 637 – 746 calories
Rowing machine: 606 – 739 calories
Stationary cycle: 556 – 604 calories
Cross-country ski machine: 595 – 678 calories

This is one of numerous studies, that rank a treadmill as the number one cardiovascular machine.
